About Us

The Lantern is a non-profit, charitable organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. We want our community to become a stronger and more vibrant place, and we work towards that goal by providing free and subsidized meeting and event space to peer support groups and other community groups that are unable to pay. When you rent space at The Lantern, you help us achieve that goal!

What We Offer

Formerly a primary school, The Lantern has a range of spaces that can accommodate a variety of programs and events, plus several amenities, including:

  • All your presentation needs: projectors, screens, mics, flipcharts;
  • Accessible event space and washrooms;
  • Banquet tables, chairs and tablecloths plus space for food preparation and storage for DIY or catered meals and tea breaks;
  • Free high-speed internet access throughout the building.

Our Spaces

Bonavista  $70/hour

4130 sq ft / 150 people seated

Our largest and most versatile space, the Bonavista is used for gala dinners, fundraisers, graduations, theatrical productions, community celebrations and much more. This accessible event space also features an assistive listening system.

Bacalhao  $40/hour

1040 sq ft / 50 people

The Bacalhao is used frequently for presentations, nonprofit AGMs, workshops, dinners, and more. With a certified kitchen attached, it is also a perfect space for catering events in the Bonavista just across the hallway.

Cape Spear  $30/hour

550 sq ft / 30 people

Our Cape Spear can be arranged to accommodate workshops and presentations or cleared out for yoga or dance rehearsals. This space also conveniently has a little kitchenette attached.

Point Amour  $30/hour

620 sq ft / 35 people

With a carpeted floor, the Point Amour is a versatile open space, great for yoga, meditation or exercise classes. It can also be set up for classroom style trainings and seminars.

Lamaline  $25/hour

525 sq ft / 20 people

Equipped with a boardroom table and chairs, this is an excellent space for smaller meetings. It also contains our 3,000+ book collection – any of which can be checked out for free!

Fort Amherst  $25/hour

320 sq ft / 16 people

Our Fort Amherst room has a central table arrangement, ideal for board or committee meetings, peer support groups, roundtables and planning discussions.

Kitchen  $20/hour

Our licensed kitchen features two electric ranges, two top-freezer refrigerators and an array of cooking equipment and catering supplies. It is ideal for catering events in our Bonavista or Bacalhao spaces, or preparing food for retail, conducting cooking workshops, or organizing family dinners.

Rose Blanche

The Rose Blanche is perfect for private counseling, quiet conversation, reflection, meditation or prayer. It provides a cozy and calming atmosphere with comfortable seating, soft lighting, and a small book collection. The Rose Blanche is currently unavailable for rentals.  Please call us for alternate space options.


Lantern Parking

There are 18 parking spaces in The Lantern’s parking lot, including 1 accessible parking spot. Street parking is available along Barnes Rd in front of the building (except during winter months Dec-Mar). Overflow parking may be available in the Basilica parking lot upon request.

If you are in the Basilica parking lot facing toward the Basilica, you will find a short path in the far right corner that will take you directly to The Lantern parking lot. There is a sign on the far right hand corner of Presentation Convent pointing to The Lantern.
